The ball joint
The ball joint itself allows the camera to kind of pivot and move in different directions, which is pretty helpful. It comes in handy if you want to point the camera or your phone in a different direction when it is mounted.
With this particular mount, the ball joint is very sturdy. The ball joint is pretty stiff so you have to give it a little bit of pressure. It is probably designed that way so that it doesn't just float around on its own.
However, it is actually a little too sturdy for what I use it for. Despite that, I guess if you had this mounted on to a helmet, it is sturdy enough that it moves, but it will not move around freely. You would need to give it some pressure in order to swap it around.
With the typical GoPro locking mechanism, it just unscrews and then you can switch the joint out.
At the top, I actually have it connected to a phone holder because I use it in the car to hold my phone for the navigation.
I have this camera mount but right now it is on phone mount setup.

How to install the GoPro Ball Joint Buckle Mount
Watch the full video tutorial here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm_q1kLwkgo
At the bottom, it has a track. This is what you would use to install it on to whatever surface that you want to mount it on. I mounted mine on to the windshield of my car.
I have the flat adhesive mount. This has a sticky surface that just sticks to the windshield and it does not come loose. That way, I can just slide this mount or any GoPro mount onto there. The adhesive mount is permanently affixed, however, the ball joint, which is the main portion, can be removed and you can switch it between different surfaces.
The ball joint has two flexible arms that slide into the permanently affixed mount. Basically, you just line it up and then the arms should just slide right in there and lock in.
Once the teeth have locked in and it is safely installed, Make sure you pull that small plastic part down (the plastic tab) which secures the mount. That way the two pieces can move freely but will not fall. This is just a new extra mounting buckle plug which offers extra safety by preventing the mounted item from accidentally slipping and falling.
To remove it, pull down on the little plastic tab and then pinch the two pressure teeth. After that, give it a little nudge and it just slides right out.

Recommendations
There are times I film in my car, or I am shooting something while my camera is mounted on this. The good thing is that, this is all connected to the windshield so there is not much vibration compared to other mounting systems that you might use on your car.
The GoPro Ball Joint Buckle Mount is handy. It just sits right there. It is at the center in my line of sight (in my car) so I can easily use my phone for navigation by mounting it there.
When you buy it, it comes with a mount which permanently adheres to one surface. If you need to use the mount in multiple places or different locations, I recommend that you buy different generic GoPro mounts. That way, you can have those permanently fixed on to maybe your helmet, your windshield and wherever else you are going to put your GoPro or your camera.
